5 Practice Tips That Actually Work

·

We've all been there — you sit down to practice, play through your pieces a few times, and feel like you're not getting anywhere. The good news is that with a few adjustments to your practice routine, you can make dramatic improvements in less time.

1. Start with the hard parts. It's tempting to play through what you already know, but real progress happens when you isolate the challenging passages and work on them first while your concentration is fresh.

2. Use a metronome (but start slow). Set the tempo much slower than the target speed. Play the passage perfectly at that tempo, then bump it up by 5 BPM. This builds muscle memory correctly from the start.

3. Practice in short, focused bursts. Research shows that 25-minute focused sessions with 5-minute breaks (the Pomodoro technique) are more effective than marathon sessions where your attention wanders.

4. Record yourself. Your phone is a powerful practice tool. Record yourself playing, then listen back. You'll catch issues you miss in the moment.

5. End with something you enjoy. Always finish your practice session playing something you love. This keeps practice associated with positive feelings and motivation.
